What's Actually Changing on Polk and Hyde This Season

What's Actually Changing on Polk and Hyde This Season

If you live on the hill, you already know the map. Swensen's on the corner of Hyde and Union. Leopold's throwing lager at 2400 Polk. Nisei quietly holding a Michelin star three blocks off the cable car line. What you may not have clocked is that the middle of that map is in motion right now, and the churn is concentrated on two streets you probably walk every week.

The thesis, stated plainly

Russian Hill's dining scene is going through a barbell moment. The decades-old anchors are still anchored. The new arrivals are small, fast, and cheap by neighborhood standards. The mid-tier chef-driven rooms in between are the ones turning over. If you have been thinking of the hill as a settled restaurant neighborhood, the next six months are going to change that read.

Here is the evidence.

Walk it, north to south

Start at the top of Polk near Union and work your way down. You will pass, in order, several openings from the last twelve months that Yelp's tracking has flagged as new to Russian Hill: Do Re Mi, Goldenette, Denya Ramen, Loveski, and Khun Mae Thai Noodles. Denya in particular has picked up early word as a Polk Street ramen room worth a repeat visit.

None of these are destination tasting menus. They are neighborhood-scale rooms with short menus, and they are clustering in a stretch that used to be defined almost entirely by wine bars and Italian trattorias. That is the shift worth naming: the new openings are not competing with Nisei or Seven Hills. They are competing with staying home.

The Cocotte-to-Le handoff

The single most consequential change on Hyde Street is not a new opening yet. It is a lease.
